  • Hi Melissa,
I wanted to give you an update on Lacie.
I may have told you this, but when we started looking for a pony for Erik (at the time, he was 4), my husband was apprehensive about spending the money on a quality registered pony (after all, there are so many $500 unregistered ponies out there). My sister and I (along with Erik) showed up to look at Lacie and we were not entirely convinced she was the pony for Erik during the time we watched her move around the arena and under saddle. After we took the tack off of her and left her loose in the arena, we stood around chatting with GC and crew. Erik ran over to the jump in the arena and started playing…. Lacie marched right up to him and nuzzled him. For the next 25 -45 minutes she followed him around arena as he ran around. She even followed him over the cross rail of the jump when he was pretending to be a pony. That was when we knew.
We have enjoyed her immensely as Erik has progressed from being a lead-line passenger to being an active partner with his pony. She gamely walks and trots around the pasture or yard never getting frustrated with him even when his aids are abrupt or confusing. We’re so proud of the choice we made for him, but that’s not even the best part.
Erik has never been on a trail ride aside from in front of the saddle with me or my husband. We finally had the opportunity to take him out on the trail on Monday. We loaded Lacie and 3 other horses into the trailer and headed to the Deschutes river trail. Erik and Lacie were right behind me, my younger sister on her QH mare behind them, with Garth taking the rear. Everything was going fine until my younger sister’s (Jessica) mare Cocoa decided to go after Lacie – this is totally out of character for Cocoa, but for some reason, she trotted up to Lacie and kicked her in the flank hard enough to make Lacie limp. I was terrified – I’ve seen this happen before and I’m usually chasing down the kicked horse after it bolts and then coming back and picking the rider up off the ground (I was a trail guide for a local resort). I can say with absolute certainty that Lacie more than earned her purchase price that day as she walked (limping and with her muscles in the flank area in spasm) carefully away from the horse that was still after her and once safely away, stopped. Erik didn’t know what to do, he wasn’t asking her anything. He was confused and clinging to the saddle horn. The action was all Lacie, taking care of my son. In my mind, and Garth’s too, that is the value of purchasing a pony from a knowledgeable, reputable breeder that starts their ponies correctly! This is all from a pony that is 6 years old this year being ridden by a 5 year old in a plain snaffle – she’s had no big person on her to “tune” her up since she left GC’s niece who was only 11 and not a pro. This speaks volumes for you and the care you take with your stock.
The point of this long missive is simply to say THANK YOU. We love Lacie dearly and are so grateful for the opportunity to have her. I know that Welsh ponies are known for their great dispositions, but this goes beyond that – I would recommend your ponies to anyone! Thanks again for such a wonderful friend for my son.
